In any case, I believe some of the awkwardness or "pseudo-profundity" that you point out in Chapter 1 is due entirely to that particular translation (which seems bad to me, at least in comparison to others). Any attempt to translate them with no account taken of the numerological and symbolical systems means to remove them entirely from canonical context and narrow the field of application. It is extremely efficient at putting ideas forward that are often obscure in Greek philosophy due to the verbose nature of how they went about trying to make points.
